Oude Molen 100 Reserve is blended with matured Eaux de Vie to give it a rich depth of smoothness and character.
- What is a blended brandy?
A blended brandy contains 30% Cape Brandy, and 70% neutral wine spirit. They are specially made to pair well with mixers and cocktails.
- Minimum of 3 years aged
The Cape Brandy component of blended brandy must be aged a minimum of 3 years in oak barrels before it can be blended and bottled.
- 33 million litres a year
South Africa currently consumes 33 million litres of blended brandy per year, making it the worlds 4th largest blended brandy consumer.
Dried apricots and raisins fill the nose, with whiffs of oak. A full fruity palate, with hints of spices give way to a subtle orange marmalade. The finish is smooth for a blended brandy, perfectly balanced with aged Eaux de vie.
The Secrets of 100 Reserve
The average age of the Cape Brandy component in Oude Molen 100 Reserve is 4-5 years, making it very old for a blended brandy. Most other blended brandies use the legislated minimum of 3 years.
Due to the longer aging of the Cape Brandy component, Oude Molen 100 Reserve is deeper and richer, with a much fuller flavour. It can be enjoyed on a few blocks of ice, or with a soda water in a high ball glass.
Eaux de Vie
The 70% spirit component in 100 Reserve is not neutral wine spirit as found in other blended brandy, but the highest quality Eaux de Vie. It is distilled in column stills to a lower more flavoured alcohol percentage, and then matured in oak barrels for a minimum of 12 months.
